I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, where there is a connection to food through farming. Small farms were everywhere – front yards, backyards and vacant plots of land.  Santa Cruz neighbors are Watsonville and Castroville, agriculture meccas. It is a city of many different cultures and flavors. I was fortunate to have  a mother who cooked from scratch using local fresh ingredients. She would grow lush gardens of artichoke, tomato and zucchini.

When I had my daughter, I was so excited to make her baby food myself! Even at that young age, I knew that I needed to give her a good foundation of health, through nutrition. Cooking from scratch was born into me. I enjoyed diving into recipes books, trying different regions of cooking.

As my family started growing up, I watched other children and people around us eating fast food and processed meals on a daily basis. I decided I wanted to help my friends and family get back to their home table. I wanted people to go to restaurants because they wanted to, not because they had to. Everyone’s lives were busy with sports and both parents working, so I started my meal prep and freezer day service. I knew I could help by cooking healthy meals that would be waiting for people when they got home! I also believed in the power nutrition has on our overall health, and I wanted to help with food related health concerns.

As fate would have it, two years later, I was thrown for a loop with my sons diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes and I immediately looked towards nutrition. With the constant guidance of Virginia Irby at Peak Health Chiropractic, and Dr. Skaria my son is strong and healthy and we are over a year without insulin. But the journey never stops and I learn new and exciting things about the relationship between food and health every single day.

This blog is a compilation of my journey and a place for me to share my passion for food, family, and health with all of you. Thank you for reading…

With love,

Elizabeth Berry
